SHOWS WE'VE SEEN
2013
7th January 2013 - Spamalot
This was the West End revival of Spamalot. According to wikipedia it followed a non-Equity tour (!) of Britain.
Stephen Tomkinson played King Arthur. I think we saw Michael Palin as God, which apparently was one of a number of appearances he made for charity.
I guess it hadn't sold out, because it looks like we were upgraded from the Upper to the Dress Circle.
8th January 2013 - The Magistrate
We saw John Lithgow in the lead role of the play in the National Theatre, which I thought was a bit of a strange building.
It was a very old play and I found it quite hard to follow. Worth it to see Lithgow on stage, though.
16th February 2013 - Rocky Horror
Rocky Horror at the Empire! I think Jonathan Wilkes played Frank. According to the internet the narrator was Philip Franks, which makes sense - I remember to chatting to him at the stage door about his production of The Tempest, which I'd seen some years before at the Playhouse.
Wilkes was most famous as Robbie Williams's housemate but I remember he was good as Frank, had a nice rapport with the audience.
2nd March 2013 - Toby Hadoke, My Stepson Stole My Sonic Screwdriver
Toby's gig at Buxton Opera House. Well, a little room round the back of the opera house, to be strictly accurate.
This was the night I met Toby properly. We all went to the pub afterwards and had a lovely evening.
23rd March 2013 - Alfie Boe
I didn't go to this. Mum and the WABSS must have taken you.
Hope it was a good nigh!
7th April 2013 - Reduced Shakespeare Company
Was this the first time we went back to the Floral Pavilion since we got married there?
I seem to remember finding the show a bit disappointing, though the finale where they do Hamlet in nine seconds backwards was good fun as always.
12th June 2013 - Bill Bailey, Qualmpeddler
Bill Bailey in Llandudno? I don't remember this at all. I also don't remember much about the Qualmpeddler tour, although I remember a lot about Bewilderness and Tinselworm.
How strange. I thought I remembered a lot of Bill Bailey stuff.
15th June 2013 - Hugh Laurie
Ah, I remember this one. We went to Oxford and ate in Jamie's Italian before the show. Maybe the first time we had truffle chips? It was OK.
Hugh was coming off the back of House and being the biggest actor in the known world. The show was him playing jazz tunes on the piano. Not really our thing but it was a good night all the same. Except we waited around out back for half an hour before the security guard came out to say he wasn't going to do the stage door. Bah.
20th June 2013 - Pet Shop Boys
Manchester Arena to see the Pet Shop Boys. This was a present for you - maybe I'd bought it for you at Christmas? Too early for your birthday.
I was pleasantly surprised how many songs I knew, ended up having a much better time than I thought. They had back-up dancers in all kinds of silly hats, including some sort of moose-head kind of arrangement.
21st June 2013 - Rocky Horror
Rocky Horror again, in Manchester this time. Oliver Thornton played Frank, he had a real Tim Curry energy. Philip Franks narrated again, apparently.
We enjoyed this matinee so much we went right back for the evening performance, although we were a bit pissed by that stage and probably too loud!
17th August 2013 - Ken Dodd
Ken Dodd at Venue Cymru! Is this the one we went to with your mum and dad? Was that really twelve years ago?
Highlights include Joaney laughing five minutes after everyone else because of the hearing aid loop, and your dad carefully taking ten minutes to peel the foil of a melted KitKat before dropping it on the floor.
We gave up at midnight but Doddy was still going strong, as were all the little old ladies with their blankets and flasks of tea.
10th October 2013 - Alexei Sayle
Alexei in Stafford? Don't remember much about this one, although I have a vague memory of wandering about Stafford town centre.
The Alexei gig I remember was later. You didn't go because you were at Jason Donovan with Jamie, so I went with Jon. Top deck of the Leaf cafe in Liverpool. Alexei mentioned some graffiti on a motorway bridge that read "The Pies The Pies" and someone in the audience told a long story about how it was his mate's band name - you could see Alexei was utterly heartbroken it had such a boring explanation.
2nd November 2013 - Jeremy Hardy
Jeremy at the Quay in Salford. I remember two things: a gag about Nick Griffin wearing a tortoise as a Nazi helmet, and we didn't try the stage door because we had no idea where it was.
Later I met Jeremy after a different gig and he signed a book - "Thanks for buying it, no-one else did". He nearly stole my pen. When I asked for it back he told me "all property is theft". But he did give it back.
17th November 2013 - Toby double bill
Don't remember much about this one? Big house for Toby. I think there were a few Dr Who actors in the audience though - Katy Manning, I seem to remember.
18th November 2013 - Spamalot
Spamalot again? Don't remember seeing it twice. Looks like the houses hadn't improved - we were upgraded again, this time all the way to the stalls.
Stephen Tomkinson still playing Arthur by this point. I have a feelingthat Hannah Waddingham was playing the Lady of the Lake, because whoever we had was really very good.

September 2016 - No Man's Land
We missed this one because I got the dates mixed up. We turned up at the Wyndham's the day after.
Never mind, we sneakily hit the stage door later and said hello to Owen Teale.
2017
25th August 2017 - Richard Herring, Oh Frig, I'm Fifty!
This was a really good show! Michael talked about his dog, Jerk, who had recently died - but really it was about the death of David Bowie. Or maybe it was about a dog.
"You can say what you want but I won't change my mind, I feel the same about you. Just the racists now!"
27th August 2017 - Richard Herring's Edinburgh Podcast
I've looked it up, and apparently his guests on this occasion were John Robins and Ahir Shah. I remember nothing at all about this and I've never heard of either of them. Did we even bother to go to this one? Or have I just forgotten it because I'm not familiar with the guests?
25th August 2017 - Richard Herring, Oh Frig, I'm Fifty!
Herring looked back over his career and all the years he'd been doing the Fringe. I think this is the show which ended with him chucking himself face-first onto a settee and lying there as the audience trooped out.
26th August 2017 - Mark Thomas, In Conversation With...
Not sure who he was in conversation with or about what. Apparently this was in the Stand Grand hall, it might have been the one where he talked about his father dying. Anyway we don't talk about him now, the big knobhead.
26th August 2017 - John Robertson, Dominant
Ah, now THIS one I remember! This is the one where John put me in a cupboard at the start of the show and ended it by you going up onstage to whip him, ending with him complaining "You hit me everywhere I don't like to be hit".
Quality family entertainment.
27th August 2017 - Andy Zaltzman, Satirist for Hire
This was the show Andy did where you could email him in advance and ask him to satirise something. You emailed him and asked him to take the piss out of me for never doing the housework, but he said that I was satirising the whole concept of domesticity. So there!
27th August 2017 - Rob Lloyd, Who, Me
Some Australian guy who thought he looked like David Tennant spun that out into an hour's show, including an interminably long interpretative dance where went through all twelve Doctors in turn. Not the worst show about Dr Who I've ever seen - that would be Avenue Who, of course - but not my favourite hour at the Fringe.
27th August 2017 - Whose Line Is It Anyway?
No need to say what I remember about this show! This was the big one - the one where Tony Slattery stumbled into our lives. What a rollercoaster ride it's been ever since.
27th August 2017 - Al Murray, The Pub Landlord's Saloon
We've seen Al Murry in the Spiegeltent a few times and they all sort of blend into one. This might have been the one where three men did the balloon dance partway through? Not sure. I think we walked past Greg Proops going to queue.

Looks like this came off a book I bought for you. Good quote though. Don't think it made it into Red and Dead, though some of his other quotes did.
